Idan Raichel (born September 12, 1977 in Kfar Saba, Israel) is a singer-songwriter, keyboardist, composer and producer known for blending a wide variety of musical traditions — Hebrew, Ethiopian, Arabic, electronic, and world music styles. He founded The Idan Raichel Project, a collaborative ensemble that features singers and instrumentalists from diverse cultural backgrounds, forging a sound that is both emotionally resonant and globally inclusive.
Raichel began his musical journey playing accordion as a child, later studying jazz piano in high school and performing in Israel’s military band. After his service, he worked as a studio musician and then assembled a demo in his parents’ basement, inviting singers from different origins, particularly Ethiopian communities, to contribute. His breakthrough came with the hit “Bo’ee (Come With Me)”, which fused Amharic and Hebrew vocals, and launched the first Idan Raichel Project album, quickly making him a major figure in Israeli popular and world music.
Through subsequent albums like Within My Walls, Quarter to Six, and solo work, Raichel has continued to push musical boundaries, combining lyrical storytelling, lush production textures, and collaborations across cultures. His music carries themes of identity, unity, love, and hope.
